The Chesterfield youth team overcame Rotherham United in an exciting 3-2 league match on Saturday.
Jake Beesley set Mark Smith’s young side on their way with a cool finish, before a stunning Rotherham equaliser levelled the scores.
Lewis Sugden then grabbed a brace for the Spireites to put Smith’s men in command at the break, only for Rotherham to pull one back and give Chesterfield a late scare. However, the Spireites hung on to claim the points.
The result means that the youth team bounced back well from last weekend’s cup exit to Doncaster Rovers, and Smith was happy with the response.
He said “We had a little blip last week but it is good to get back to winning ways.”
“They did well- it was always going to be a difficult game because we got a hoodoo on them last season where we beat them three times.
"I said before the game that would have acted as an incentive to them, but I thought we came to terms with that.
“We did start with a high tempo so that was pleasing. We have spoken before about getting on top, and sometimes it might take an hour to do that against some teams.
"It took us 25 minutes for us to get in to the game, but we scored three good goals so that was pleasing.”
