Goalscorer Sam Clucas was delighted to get the equaliser and ensure Chesterfield earned a point from a tough game against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
A high lofted ball from Gary Roberts gave Clucas the chance and he was quick to praise his teammate for the assist.
“That’s Gary Roberts for you, everyone knows he’s got quality. I just gambled on it and luckily it fell to me. I watched it come to me and just tried to hit the target and hoped it went in.”
The versatile midfielder has been employed in a number of position already this season but insists he is happy to fill any role given to him.
“I’ve done a bit everywhere but as long as I’m on the pitch I’m happy. I just think we should have gone out there and won today.
“We seem to concede a goal and then start playing after that but we need to start playing straight away in both halves because they nearly scored straight away and then hit the bar so we need to start better than that.”
Clucas credited goalkeeper Tommy Lee for keeping the team in the game but lamented a number of chances he himself spurned.
“Tommy was brilliant today. He pulled out some class saves, especially at the end. Both teams had chances today, I thought I should have had a couple of goals in the first half, but a point was probably fair at the end.”
Although the Spireites’ form has dipped in recent games with only one win in the last six games the Chesterfield new boy believes that they can turn it around and insists that he is happy with his time at the club so far.
“Every time we get beat there’s always one goal in it like Bristol city which was 3-2 right at the death so we need to get the lead, see it out and be strong as a unit. It’s a game based on results.
“We like to come out and play nice football and entertain the fans but ultimately we want to get three points at the end of the game and we need to fix it. I’m loving it at the minute and long may it continue.”
