After signing a new one-year deal at the Proact Stadium, Ritchie Humphreys discusses his time at Chesterfield and looks forward to the 2014/15 campaign. The PFA chairman's new contract will keep him at Chesterfield until the end of next season and the veteran full-back expressed his delight at signing a new deal.
He said: “I feel very, very fortunate to have walked into the changing room last season so I’m absolutely delighted that I’ve got another year here to do the job that I love.
“For the age that I am, the amount of games I played last season was an absolute delight and an honour. When the manager offered me another year, I was delighted to sign it.”
Humphreys joined Chesterfield after 12 years at Hartlepool United and the former Pools star explained how his move to the Proact Stadium has felt like a fresh start.
“It’s been brilliant for me, a fresh start and probably rejuvenated me a little bit," commented the Spireite before adding: "I’m a lot closer to home than I have been in the last few years so there’s a lot to be said for that.
“I’ve got a seven-month old child so being at home and being with my family has made a real difference in my personal life.”
The 36-year-old played a crucial role in Chesterfield's 2013/14 Sky Bet League 2 title winning campaign and Humphreys discussed how he felt the Spireites' season exceeded all expectations.
He said: “It’s been an unbelievable season from start to finish. I couldn’t believe that when I came in the door we would have a season like we have had.
“The celebrations that go with securing the league title – you can never recreate that and nobody can ever take that away from you. When the fans ran on the pitch and they put the lads on their shoulders, it was just a fantastic occasion.
“To win something like that and to share it with everybody at the club who’s put an effort in to make sure we’re champions is an incredible feeling.”
