Following the release of the 2014/15 Sky Bet League 1 fixtures, Spireites captain Ian Evatt looks towards the new campaign and believes that Chesterfield will have an exciting season.

The current League 2 champions face Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium on the opening day of the 2014/15 season and Evatt believes that the fixture will act as a marker for both sides.

Speaking to Spireites Player, he said: “It’s a great test for both teams. We’re champions of League 2 and we're both teams with good reputations. It’s going to be an exciting game and one where we can measure how good we really are.

“If we’re as good as we think we are then it’s going to be an exciting season because I am certainly very positive going into this year.”

Chesterfield round their campaign off against Sheffield United on Saturday, May 2 and the captain acknowledged that the fixture could have more than just local pride riding on it.

“Football sometimes has a funny way of throwing these things at you," explained Evatt before adding: "I already think that game will have something on it, hopefully for the better for us.

“If we go into the last game of the season with the chance of play-offs or promotion it will be great and to go there and win would be fantastic for both the club and the fans.”

The 32-year-old maintains a positive mentality as Chesterfield prepare for life in League 1 and commented on his team-mates' work ethic over the summer.

He said: “It’s been great to have a little break but none of us have stopped training all summer, it’s going to be a big year for this club and a big year for us individually.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go into this league and attack it like we did last season. Hopefully we can get a great start and you never know where we could end up.

“I came to this club to be successful, I wanted to get back into the Championship and that’s my aim. If that means putting in extra hours in the summer or extra hours in training then I’m willing to do that.”
