Chesterfield manager Paul Cook welcomed the return of the players on Wednesday morning and discussed the team's pre-season preparations. The first team returned to the Proact Stadium to begin training for the 2014/15 Sky Bet League 1 campaign but will travel to Portugal before the full schedule can begin.
Speaking to Spireites Player, Cook said: “The lads are back and quite a few of them have been doing different programmes over the summer. Players are a lot fitter now than years gone by so pre-season isn’t as intense as it used to be.
“We’re off to Portugal for four days and coming back on Monday, the players will be off on Tuesday and we’ll hit the preseason programme on Wednesday.
“The schedule will be two days on with three sessions a day; a football session, a physical session and a recovery session. They have every third day off and that’s a continuous cycle for six weeks.”
Having earned promotion from League 2 at the end of the 2013/14 season, Chesterfield now face the test of a higher division and expectations around the club are varied.
“Everyone’s got a different opinion on where they want us to finish," explained Cook. "I think the important thing is we want to finish in the best league position possible for us.
“If you don’t start a season trying to win the league then there’s something wrong with you.”
The Liverpudlian also took time to discuss Chesterfield's ambitions in the transfer market ahead of the new campaign and how he is looking to ensure only the right type of player joins the squad at the Proact Stadium.
“We’ve got good players at the club, the problem we’re having with recruitment at the minute is that we have to bring players in that are going to make us better and stronger," commented the gaffer.
“We’ve been very close to one or two now but we’ve lost out to other clubs. That can be for a number of different reasons.
“We’re getting closer and closer to a striker. There’s a lot more that goes into it now, we’ve got to make sure that the signings that come in are of the right type and quality that will take us forward.”
