During pre-season Chesterfield have been working closely with their Derbyshire neighbours Staveley Miners Welfare FC, and both club chairmen are pleased to be building a strong relationship. In recent weeks Mark Smith's youth team have been using the facilities at the Northern Counties East League's stadium for training. Staveley chairman Terry Damms has been happy to lend a hand, explaining how the situation came about and the welcome Spireites fans can expect if they come to visit Staveley.
He said: "We got asked about three or four weeks ago, and were asked could they possibly bring the youth team down for training. The relationship's good, I know Dave Allen and I've met Chris Turner several times and we've been trying to link with them as they are our local professional club. Last year we offered free entry to season ticket holders from Chesterfield and we're going to do that again this year. "
A Chesterfield 11 will make the short trip to Staveley for a friendly on Monday, July 28, and the chairman is looking forward to welcoming the Spireites and their traveling fans.
Damms said: "We're as keen as any non-league club to generate funds for pitch renovations and things like that. We don't want to take any business away from Chesterfield, but if they're away we'd like their supporters to come down and bring their families because we are a big community club.
"We get a lot of Chesterfield supporters coming down and they're more than welcome to use the facilities. We need to try to help and they're helping us so it's networking and its good."
Chesterfield chairman Dave Allen also spoke positively about the club's relationship with Staveley, emphasising the vital nature of such relationships.
He said: "Terry's been very supportive and very helpful in as much as he lets the kids train down there and use the pitch and we're grateful for that. I'll do all I can to help Terry out down there at Staveley."
On Thursday, August 14 former champion boxer Johnny Nelson will be speaker along with comedian Jimmy Carol will be appearing for an evening at Staveley Miners Welfare FC. The start time is 7pm for a 7:30pm start, with more details to follow soon.
