9 July 2014

Former Chesterfield boss Roy McFarland popped into the Proact Stadium for a chat ahead of his appearance at this month’s Senior Spireites lunch.

Having managed the club at their former Saltergate home McFarland praised the efforts of the club to get to their new stadium.

He said: “What a magnificent stadium. All the time I was here they were always promising that this is what’s going to happen and I hoped it would in the time that I was here.

“The club was always forward planning, there was always talk about the new stadium and ambition in terms of trying to get promotion and pleasingly it’s happened since my time here at Chesterfield.

“Paul Cook’s done a tremendous job. I went to one of their last games at Burton Albion at the end of the season and the football that they played was superb. They play very attractive, positive, attacking football and I can’t credit Paul enough for the way he’s got them playing at the moment.”

McFarland, who managed the Spireites from 2003 to 2007, spoke about some of the highlights of his time with Chesterfield.

He said: “We had a great run in the League Cup one year and knocked two Premier League teams out before losing to Charlton Athletic on penalties. That was a bit sad to be knocked out that way because even on the day we played particularly well and probably should have won it in the 90 minutes.

“I had a happy time here, I remember the last game of the season when we played at home and we needed to win to stay up. We did, we won the game with almost the last kick of the game and it worked out for us.

“You’ve got to believe that you’re going to have success and you’ve got to get the players believing and we had that. We all thought it was over with just a few minutes left to play, but I sensed then the spirit of the football club.”

McFarland will attend the Senior Spirites lunch on Monday, July 28 (12.30pm for 1pm), where copies of his recently published autobiography will also on sale.

The cost of attending the two-course lunch is just £11.95. Places can be booked by calling in at the Proact Stadium and speaking to the conference & banqueting team or by phoning 01246 209765 (ext 4162).
