17 January 2014

Chesterfield travel to Roots Hall to take on Southend United in their 25th fixture of the 2013/14 Sky Bet League 2 season.

Overview

The Shrimpers are currently fifth in the League 2 table having taken 42 points from 25 games, drawing 1-1 with Plymouth Argyle in their last outing at Home Park.

Southend have lost just once in 14 games in all competitions, with a notable 4-1 win over Championship outfit Millwall in the third round of the FA Cup that secured a fourth round tie against Phil Brown's former side Hull City.

The Spireites approach Saturday's game on the back of a 4-0 win over Bury at the Proact Stadium last weekend where goals from Gary Roberts, Jay O'Shea, Marc Richards and Dan Gardner sealed an emphatic win to maintain pressure on their promotion rivals.

After two postponed matches in early January, Chesterfield dropped to third place in the League 2 table but have a game in hand over Scunthorpe United and Burton Albion in first and second place respectively.

These sides meet for the third time this season, with the Spireites winning 2-1 in the league in late August through a last-minute Armand Gnanduillet header before Southend returned to the Proact Stadium in early December to prevail 3-1 and knock Chesterfield out of the FA Cup.
