Spireites midfielder Jimmy Ryan believes the 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe United on Saturday was a good result for Chesterfield's promotion campaign.

Speaking to Spireites Player after the game, Ryan said: “With the way the game went on, I think a draw was a fair result. The conditions played a big part today but to come here and get a point is a good result.

“It’s hard because we like to pass the ball around and get the ball on the floor which is hard in this league. A lot of teams want to kick it long and play the conditions with physicality.

“We’re not really a physical side but we’ve stood up to a lot of teams and a lot of physical sides and we’ve come out on top which shows the league that we can do the ugly side as well.”

After going a goal down early on in the game at Glanford Park, Eoin Doyle equalised for Chesterfield from the penalty spot just before half time and the Liverpudlian was in no doubt that the striker would be the first to step up.

“We were talking about it on the bus but with Doyle on the pitch he was always going to be the first one to take it and he slotted it lovely," explained the midfielder.

“It was definitely a penalty from where I was and I think Robbo was unlucky not to get his a couple of minutes earlier so I think it evened up.”

The draw against Scunthorpe kept the Spireites three points clear atop the Sky Bet League 2 table and with the second leg of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area final approaching, Ryan is confident that Chesterfield are in a strong position.

“If you’d asked anyone at the start of the season where they’d like to be at this point then it’s exactly where we are," claimed the 25-year-old before adding: "Top of the league and going into the second leg of the area final of the Johnstone’s Paint Tophy with a nice lead.

“You always want to be in the lead going into the home leg but it’s 90 minutes and anything can happen in football. Fleetwood have a good side, they’ve got goals on the pitch so we’ve got to be up for our game to make sure we get through.”
