Cook: "Not Good Enough."

23 February 2014

Spireites manager Paul Cook believed his side were a long way off their best during Chesterfield's 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

A first half Max Kretzschmar penalty was enough to seal the home side's first victory at Adams Park since October after a game where opportunities were scarce.

Speaking to Spireites Player after the match, Cook was clearly disappointed. “Unfortunately, that’s probably as bad a performance as we’ve had for a long, long time," explained the manager.

“We’ll analyse our own performance because that was a long way from us today. I think every Chesterfield fan who travelled today knows that we’re a lot better than that.

“At times like this I must respect the fact that the players have been very good. We’ve had a harsh lesson today but there’s a long way to go and we’ve got to be at it to compete.”

The travelling fans were incensed when referee Dean Whitestone awarded the Chairboys with a penalty after Ian Evatt was adjudged to have handled the ball in the Chesterfield area but the Spireites boss refused to attribute his side's defeat to a refereeing decision.

He said: “The referees play no part in it. We weren’t good today. We were in a gear that was way below how you win football matches.

“We never got any tempo to the game. Most managers can come on and blame referees – we’ll have none of that at our club, we’ll try and have some good manners."

Wycombe pulled four points clear of the Sky Bet League 2 relegation zone after yesterday's victory and Cook was quick to compliment the Buckinghamshire side for their battling performance.

“You’ve got to give Wycombe great credit," said the gaffer. "It’s a great win for Wycome, they worked their socks off for the victory and covered every blade of grass on the pitch.

“We wish Wycombe every respect in what they’re trying to achieve. Gareth’s lads did him proud today. Certainly the officials play no part in our result. As disappointing as we were today, we’ll give Wycombe great credit for winning the game."
