Two first-half goals from striker Charlie Dawes set a young Spireites XI on the way to a 3-2 victory at Dronfield Town on Friday night.Lewis Sugden also scored for Chesterfield with an impressive effort at the end of the half before the hosts launched a second-half comeback, scoring twice in very wet conditions, but the Spireites held on to win.
Mason Coy appeared to be brought down just inside the area early on, but referee David Evans ruled that the foul took place just outside the 18-yard box and the resulting free-kick, taken by Derek Daly, was blocked by a defender.
After Luke Clark went close to scoring in the seventh minute, hitting a post with a low shot, Dawes gave Chesterfield a tenth minute lead with a neat finish after connecting with Curtis Morrison's cut-back following a run down the left wing.
Clark then put a free-kick over before the hosts had their first chance of the game when Will Earl's fierce shot was turned over by Aaron Chapman at his near post.
Dawes (33) made it 2-0 with a low shot and Sugden beat keeper Richard Henson with a long-range shot strike just a minute before the break.
Early after the re-start, Coy received a good ball from Morrison inside the area but found his route to goal blocked by Henson.
Sugden then tried another effort from distance which went wide of the target.
Dronfield pulled a goal back in the 50th minute following a mix-up between Chapman and Laurence Maguire.
That was the start of a good spell for the home side with Jamie Willis firing over and Jack Broadhead coming to Chesterfield's rescue with an important clearance after Chapman kicked the ball straight to an opposition player.
Dronfield scored a second goal when Willis (68) headed beyond substitute keeper Miles Wright after Charles Bradwell chipped the ball into the area.
Chesterfield rallied late on with Daly, Maguire and Jake Beesley all having efforts saved while Jordan Walshaw put a free header wide of the target.
