Two glorious strikes from Moreto and Tavares saw Portugal beat a rugged England side 2-1 in the FA U17 International Tournament at the Proact Stadium.

A good crowd of 1,073 braved the wet Derbyshire conditions to make it to the Proact Stadium and cheer on the Young Lions.

Just over ten minutes into the encounter and proceedings had been fairly even, until a moment of quality broke the deadlock for the visitors.

Reported Manchester United target Moreto, Portugal's captain, collected the ball 20 yards from goal and curled home the most cultured of right-footed effots past Ashton Oxborough in the England goal.

Forward Jahmal Hector-Ingram came close to equalising for England midway through the first 40-minute half, but his angled shot was saved by Portugal 'keeper Fabio Duarte.

William Patching, patrolling the midfield, then tested Duarte's handing in the testing conditions, firing in a free kick that the 'keeper was able to parry away.

Chasing the game, it was England doing the majority of the attacking, and Hector-Ingram showed some good touches on the right to beat two defenders. However, his left-footed strike from the edge of the box was weak and easily gathered by Duarte.

Left back Haydon Coulson made a series of pacy runs down the wing, but despite the English probing they went in at the interval a goal behind.

By the time the second half started the rain had only intensified, however it took England less than two minutes to level the contest, Layton Ndukwu finding the back of the net from close range.

With just under ten minutes left on the clock and the match sidling, another touch of class put the Portuguese back in the lead. The ball was cut back along the slippery turf to Tavares, who steadied himself before magnificently picking his spot, leaving the 'keeper a spectator.

A flurry of late England forward forays gave the home fans hopes of an equaliser, but with the sodden turf only hampering the home side's ability to control the ball, the referee's whistle arrived before the Young Lions could find a second goal.
