A Poem for Chesterfield

10 August 2014

Chesterfield FC poet-in-residence and Derbyshire poet laureate, Helen Mort, gave a talk to guests at the recent Senior Spireites lunch.

Helen talked about her background and current roles and also gave her first public reading of her latest Chesterfield FC poem, titled "Rise", which was inspired by Helen's attendance at last season's final fixture v Fleetwood and epitomises the emotion of the day.

Rise

And so we swarm the pitch.
We move like river water,
scratch at a year-long itch.
We are one. We are the thought
you wish you'd had. We animate
the field, until the still turf breathes,
grass rises underneath our heels.
We are as small as seeds
but here we are a forest, blue
and swaying, growing fast and high.
We didn't know we'd rise - it's true,
but when your kit's the colour of the sky,
you have to trust in it. We join
our hands, and every join becomes
a stitch. We swarm the pitch.
We swarm the pitch.
We'll swarm the pitch.
