After Chesterfield’s gritty 1-0 win away at Dagenham manager Paul Cook told Spireites Player how pleased he was to be able to grind out the three points.

He said: “Today we’ve come away to a very strong team, Dagenham have had a great year, and in my opinion we were deserved winners. We carried more threat and we were solid out of possession.”

Striker Eoin Doyle scored the only goal of the game, his fourth in the last five matches, but was ably supported by a group of hardworking teammates, who Cook was quick to praise:

“The most important thing was that we did the ugly side of football well. We wanted the lads to work very hard. You see Marc Richards and Dan Gardner come off and you can see how tired they were- they gave everything," explained the Liverpudlian.

With the top four in Sky Bet League 2 all winning the result leaves Chesterfield second in the league and four points ahead of Fleetwood Town, the first team outside the automatic promotion places.

With just two games to go, the manager knows how close his team now is, not just to promotion, but possibly even becoming League 2 champions.

Cook said: “We go to Burton next week backed by a massive support and it means so much to our town to be promoted. We’re doing our best to try and get promoted and all we need is everyone behind us and we can do it together.

"We’ve still got one eye on trying to be champions, that’s never deserted us. If we’re not champions or we don’t get promoted we’ll be the first to wish someone else who’s done well. Our aim is always to be the best that we can be.”
