Cook Eyes Promotion

24 April 2014

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook approaches Sunday's game against Burton Albion knowing that victory at the Pirelli Stadium would all but see his side promoted into League 1.

With all other League 2 fixtures taking place on Saturday afternoon, Chesterfield will know exactly what is required to seal promotion before they kick-off at 3pm on Sunday but the gaffer is targeting nothing less than a victory.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's fixtures, he said: “We all feel that if we win on Sunday then we are well on our way to promotion and that’s all you can say because you never know what happens in football.

“It will be a difficult weekend for us. We’ve all got to go through the pain of Saturday, there’s no getting away from it. I wish we could just go out first, play and win because our focus would just be on winning a game of football.

“No matter what I do to dress it up in terms of just being another game, of course it has other significance because we’re very close to where we want to be.”

The Spireites are just two points behind League 2 leaders Scunthorpe United and with two games remaining, Cook has aspirations of Chesterfield becoming champions of the division.

“We’ve got a desire to be champions," explained the manager before adding: "I feel it’s something you must target, if we’re not champions then we have a desire to be promoted.

“We’re just looking forward to the game, we know no matter what that if we win two matches then we’ll be promoted and that’s the most important thing.”

Undefeated in six consecutive league outings, Cook's side have found form at just the right time and the Liverpudlian believes his players have what it takes to carry Chesterfield over the line.

He said: “The players are in a good place, we’ve got some players playing really well. The lads know what’s at stake, they’ve carried this expectancy all season.

“When we've lost a player like Sam Morsy or Ollie Banks we’ve closed ranks, we’ve come out with performances and won games. The players should take great credit for that because they continue to find a way.”
