Spireites Fighting Fit

Over the last couple of months, the Spireites players have been attending local boxing gym, Spire Boxing and have been put through their paces by the coaches.

Robbie Sivyer, who is the founder of the boxing gym, has been putting the players through intense workouts in order to take the players out of their comfort zone and lift their fitness levels.

Sivyer said: “We work on upper body strength, core strength and balance mainly. The coaching staff's idea was to take the players out of their comfort zone and do something a little bit different. In boxing, you have to use a lot of muscles and it gives them a little bit of an edge.

“There’s one or two that I have my eye on. Half a dozen of them can put in a few decent punches and one or two of them wouldn’t look out of place in a boxing gym.”

Fitness coach, Shane Nicholson, believes that the boxing can have a positive effect on the players entering the final minutes of a game.

He commented: “A lot of times in this league, teams give away goals in the last ten minutes so for me it’s all about mental attitude. This sport brings out a great mental attitude and we can certainly find out here whether they have it or not. For me, in games at the moment, it seems to be paying off.

“The last ten minutes of games are vital; if we can stay mentally strong within those last ten minutes then we have a great chance of winning games.”
