Spireites midfielder Gary Roberts believes the team need to up their game after Saturday's 2-0 victory over Daventry Town.Goals from Roberts and Jimmy Ryan were enough to see off the challenge of the Purple Army but despite the victory, the Liverpudlian wasn't getting carried away with Chesterfield's performance.
In his post match interview, Roberts said: “We’re not silly, we weren’t great today. We weren’t flowing as we were in the early season but it’s a win, just to have a ‘W’ by our name will cheer the lads up.
“We’re here to win games and with the squad we’ve got, we’ve got to win games. We won today but we weren’t great.
“We’ve got to up our game on Tuesday. We’re up against a better side who can hurt us so we’re not being too silly and saying we’re great because we’ve won a game.”
Having won eight of their nine games in the league so far this season, Daventry were a form side making the journey to the Proact Stadium on Saturday and the Chesterfield midfielder commented on the Northamptonshire side's performance.
He said: “It was always going to be tricky, they’re on a great run. Whatever league they’re in, it’s one game and it’s their cup final.
“I think a little bit of fitness and a little bit of class showed in the end. Fair play to them, they came and gave us a great game, we can’t say we were brilliant but we’re in the hat.”
Roberts broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, getting on the end of a well-weighted Jay O'Shea free-kick to give Chesterfield the lead. The 29-year-old spoke of his delight in getting back on the scoresheet.
“We’ve worked on set pieces for and against a lot this week so it’s nice to score from a set piece. Personally I’m delighted to see it go in because I haven’t scored for a couple of weeks now," explained Roberts.
