Marc Richards, Chesterfield's top goalscorer in 2012/13, believes a strong start to the new campaign will help the Spireites' push for promotion. In an interview with Spireites Player, Richards expressed that a continuation of Chesterfield's 2012/13 end of season form would put the club in contention for a high league finish in 2013/14.
“I think the last 30 games of the season last year were play-off form so I think if we can take that form into the start of our season then we should be contenders for a promotion spot," said the striker.
Richards added that the team is doing all they can to prepare and ensure they make a strong start. He said: “We’re in training now for the next six weeks, we’re going to get as fit as we can to be ready for the start of the season.”
Until Thursday, Richards and the rest of the squad had been on their summer break. Speaking about the time off, last year's top goalscorer said: “It’s a time to get your feet up and reflect on what sort of season you’ve had personally and with the team. Then come in pre-season and try and better yourselves for next season."
In a full return to training, the players were already being put through their paces. “It’s a shock to the system, with six or seven weeks off you tend to relax as much as you can. Pre-season these days isn’t just about plodding around fields and running up hills," said Richards.
