The players had their first squad training session of the pre-season programme on Thursday and were put through their paces from the first minute.Following the last game of the 2012/13 season on April 27, the players have been on their summer break. On Thursday, the squad made a full return to fitness and football work.
Speaking about the break, Marc Richards said: “You enjoy a bit of time with your family and friends and try and get away on as many holidays as you can.”
Fitness Coach, Shane Nicholson, feels that the players have followed their summer fitness guides and have returned in good condition.
“The lads have gone away with their programmes so they’re coming back with the certain level of fitness that we expect. As you can see, they've come back in decent shape so my job becomes easier," said Nicholson.
The Fitness Coach added: “Before, you went home, you had your six weeks off and you never did a thing, now you have to come back to a certain level. They’re tested on day one, if they’re not at that level then they’re doing catch-up.”
Chesterfield's most recent acquisition, Jimmy Ryan, had been looking forward to the return and relished his first day at the club.
“I’ve been a bit bored all summer so I’m glad to be meeting new people and getting back into football," said the Spireites midfielder.
