Goals from new signing Gary Roberts and on-trial Jamie Devitt either side of the break gave the Spireites a 2-1 win at home to Huddersfield Town in their opening home pre-season fixture.

Manager Paul Cook included on-trial Ritchie Humphreys in his starting line-up, alongside summer signings Jimmy Ryan, Gary Roberts and Sam Morsy. Trialists Matty Brown, John Shaw, Hendrick Cakin, Conor Clifford and Jamie Devitt were among the substitutes, together with another recent recruit, Eoin Doyle.

The Spireites nearly got off to the worst possible start, during the opening minute of the match, when Sam Hird gave the ball away and Adam Hammill tricked his way past Drew Talbot before delivering a cross that was headed just over the bar.

Just a couple of minutes later, Huddersfield threatened again, when good play from Danny Ward led to a dangerous cross being flashed across the goal and it was well dealt with at the back post by Talbot.

The Spireites began to settle into the game and move the ball around nicely and this led to their first effort of the game - a Jay O'Shea effort from 20 yards that went over the bar.

After some good defending by the Terriers to deny O'Shea a shooting opportunity,Tendayi Darikwa's cross was only half cleared and the ball eventually fell to Huddersfield old boy Gary Roberts who produced a crisp left-footed finish past Alex Smithies.

Huddersfield hit back just a couple of minutes later when Danny Ward's shot from the right-hand side of the box was deflected off of Liam Cooper past the helpless Tommy Lee.

Ward was looking bright for the visitors and he went close after beating Ritchie Humphreys on the right-hand side. James Vaughan was proving a nuisance for the Chesterfield defence and he almost got his reward when he poked just wide after good play again down the Huddersfield right.

Nice interchange in the middle of the park between new boys Roberts and Sam Morsy led to an opening for Darikwa, but he could only fire straight at Smithies. Roberts then forced Smithies into a superb save from a free kick after Lynch had fouled O'Shea. The two teams went in level at the break following an open and entertaining first half.

There were four changes for the Spireites at the break with Doyle, Sam Togwell, Armand Gnanduillet and trialist Brown coming on in place of Hird, Ryan, O'Shea and Richards. Huddersfield changed their entire side at the break.

There was a bright start to the second half for Chesterfield as Gnanduillet's cross found Roberts at the back post, who squared the ball to Doyle, whose shot was well saved by Ian Bennett. Another chance arose for the Spireites soon after as Doyle released Darikwa down the right hand side and fired into the side netting.

The Spireites made more changes on the hour-mark as three more trialists entered the game with Shaw, Devitt and Clifford replacing Humphreys, Roberts and Morsy. There was another change for Chesterfield just a couple of minutes later as Cakin replaced Talbot, who had previously taken a slight knock.

The Spireites took the lead when trialist Devitt scored a sumptuous free kick from 25 yards out, beating the wall and finding the top left corner of the goal. After bright play from Cakin down the right hand side, his cross fell for Doyle, who did not connect cleanly with his attempt at goal and it went harmlessly wide.

Gnanduillet and Cakin were looking threatening and they worked an opening with Gnanduillet firing straight at Ian Bennett after a clever flick from Cakin. Bennett was forced into a superb save with just 15 minutes remaining when he denied Gnanduillet a goal after  being put through on the goal by the bright Doyle.

Youngster Jack Broadhead was brought on with just over ten minutes remaining, replacing Liam Cooper. Huddersfield almost got themselves a late equaliser when Danny Carr's bright play down the left hand side led to an opening which was defended very well.

Chesterfield: Lee, Talbot (Cakin 61), Hird (Brown 45), Cooper, Humphreys (Shaw 60), Ryan (Togwell 45), Morsy (Clifford 60), Darikwa, O'Shea (Doyle 45), Roberts (Devitt 60), Richards (Gnanduillet 45).
