Paul Cook pointed to his side's lack of firepower after the a 1-0 defeat at home to leaders Gillingham.
Giving his thoughts to Spireites Player, Cook said: “You’ve got to give Gillingham credit. They seem to do that regularly and it’s just disappointing for us.
"In the second half the lads tried their best to do the right things, get the ball wide and put a quality ball into the box.
"We did create chances which on another day might have gone in and we could have come away with a draw but all in all it’s been a really disappointing week.
"We’re all under no illusions of the task at hand at the club. We simply can’t score enough goals and there’s no hiding behind the facts.
"I think our defensive record is okay. We don’t concede a lot of goals but that firepower is something that we’re lacking.
"It’s hard for our supporters because we all know everyone wants success and our chairman and our board of directors have put in a lot of money but unfortunately at the minute we’re falling short.
"We do lack some numbers up top, but that’s not being critical, so we must now build this club with more firepower and that has been symbolised today with the two young lads that have come on.
"Hopefully they can be that bright spark that can push this club in the right direction towards this back end of the season. “
