John Dungworth felt that the players who featured in Tuesday night's Derbyshire Senior Cup semi-final at Matlock Town emerged with some credit, despite losing 2-1.
After taking an early lead through a Jacob Hazel penalty, awarded after the striker was fouled in the area, the young Spireites were beaten when Massiah McDonald scored for the hosts.
Dungworth said: "Generally, we were very pleased with the display. I thought we applied ourselves really well, to say we had such a young team playing.
"We were disciplined and I thought everybody stuck to their job. Overall, it was a massive learning experience for all the players."
Dungworth felt that Chesterfield were unlucky to not score a second goal. "I think we had a definite penalty refused (when Hazel was challenged in the area). It looked more blatant than the first one. Jacob also had one cleared off the line."
