Spireites midfielder Sam Togwell praised the team's performance as they overcame difficult conditions to defeat Plymouth Argyle 2-0.The North Derbyshire side prevailed at a cold, wet and windy Proact Stadium on Saturday afternoon and speaking after the game, Togwell said: “Credit to everyone today, we stuck in. It wasn’t pretty. We knew it wasn’t going to be with the conditions but it’s a massive three points.
“We knew it was going to be tough, it was really windy. We played the conditions well in the first half, got 2-0 up and then couldn’t get out of our half in the second half because of the conditions.
“With Shez coming back, they were always going to be working hard and getting in our faces but we matched it today and that was important.”
Both sides were awarded penalties during the game but the midfielder felt that the decisions to award the spot kicks weren't necessarily the right ones: “They’re both harsh in my eyes. I think he’s given ours for handball, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t.
“Matty Brown was unlucky, for me it’s never been a sending off. It’s probably started outside the box anyway. The ref’s sent him off for last man and if you look at it again there’s probably two or three around him.”
Marc Richards buried Chesterfield's 42nd minute penalty low to Luke McCorkmick's left-hand side and Reuben Reid's 64th minute spot kick was brilliantly saved by Tommy Lee to preserve the Spireites' two goal lead. “Luckily we got away with the penalty, it’s a great save by Tommy," said Togwell.
“He has to save it, that’s his job. He’s one of the best ‘keepers in the league and we know that.”
Saturday was only the 29-year-old's second start for the Spireites this season and the midfielder spoke about his battle to get into the starting XI: “It has been frustrating but the lads have been doing well and I couldn’t really say anything to get back in the team.
“The results have been indifferent over the last few weeks and I’ve had to bide my time, keep myself fit doing extra work and today was my chance so I took it.”
With a number of players injured going into the Christmas period, Chesterfield will be relying on the depth of their squad going into Friday's game at Exeter City. “It’ll be a tough game but that’s why you have a squad of players. You have to rely on the squad and we believe we’ve got one of the best squads in the league," explained Togwell.
