Chesterfield team news ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet League 2 fixture against Plymouth Argyle at the Proact Stadium. Both Liam Cooper (ankle) and Jimmy Ryan (shoulder) picked up knocks in the Spireites' midweek win over Oldham Athletic in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and a question mark hangs over their availability for Saturday.
Speaking to Spireites Player about the injuries, Chesterfield manager Paul Cook said: “It’s touch and go at the minute, it’s going to be a close one. Both lads are keen to play, both are very committed to the cause and are very good players.
“I’d rather lose a player for one game than lose him for a lot of games. Certainly with the two lads, they won’t be risked if they’re not right.”
After missing out on the cup tie, Jay O'Shea (flu) and Armand Gnanduillet (thigh) have both recovered from their minor set-backs and are fully fit for the Plymouth game. However, in his pre match conference, Cook confirmed that Gnanduillet won't make the bench on Saturday and Marc Richards will be starting up front for the Spireites.
Gary Roberts picked up a hamstring injury opening exchanges of Chesterfield's FA Cup tie against Southend United last weekend and won't be available for selection this Saturday but the manager believes the midfielder is making strong progress and could be back earlier than expected.
“I’d like to think that Gary Roberts might only be two or three weeks away which is really good news for us as a club," explained the manager.
After previously featuring for Sheffield United in this season's competition, Callum McFadzean was cup tied for Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Oldham but will return for selection on Saturday.
Sam Morsy (knee) and Nathan Smith (ankle) have been out for a longer period of time with their respective injuries but both are closing in on a return to first team action. The manager said: “I think in a week’s time we’ll see Nathan and Samy joining the squad again, both are working really hard off the pitch.”
