Caretaker-manager Tommy Wright was delighted his side’s second-half display as they came from behind to beat Oldham Athletic for their opening victory of the campaign.
After Matt Smith gave Oldham the lead midway through the first-half, Danny Whitaker (48) equalised and a stoppage time own goal from Smith saw the Spireites through to the second round of the competition. I thought we caused them problems.
Speaking to Spireites Player, Wright said: “I thought we were really good in the second-half and I was really pleased with the response.
“In the first-half we were lacking in energy and they looked sharper and stronger. I changed the system at half-time and put Danny (Whitaker) behind Rico (Marc Richards) to get more support to him. It worked because we moved the ball quicker, had a bit more energy and created more opportunities.
“I’m pleased with the response I got from from the players. They showed a lot of character against a team in a higher division and we definitely deserved to win following our second-half performance.”
Whitaker, who also missed a second-half penalty, was praised by Wright. “I think that’s his best position - in the hole,” he said. “He’s got great qualities in around the box and I do like him as a player.
“I’m trying to get one or two other players in to make us more flexible so we can change things. We’ve changed things twice in two games and it’s worked.”
Tommy's full interview will be on Spireites Player tomorrow morning.
