Chesterfield's bid to retain the Johnstone's Paint Trophy ended in failure at Doncaster as they went down to a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday night.
An 83rd minute goal from substitute Jordan Ball was enough to give Doncaster victory after Richard O'Donnell had kept them at bay with some good saves.
Doncaster enjoyed a good spell of early possession but only had one effort on target - a low shot from Martin Woods which was saved by Richard O'Donnell - to show for their efforts.
A searching through ball from skipper Sam Togwell nearly set Craig Westcarr free but James Husband came to his side's rescue with a timely challenge to cut out the danger.
Westcarr was in the thick of the action again when Micah Evans squared to him inside the area but the striker put a weak shot straight at keeper Gary Woods.
Robbie Blake spurned a good chance for the hosts, heading over from close range, while O'Donnell was called into action to keep out Kyle Bennett's 20-yard effort.
Chris Atkinson failed to put a header on target towards the end of the half.
The lively Bennett put a shot on the run wide before the Spireites fashioned a couple of efforts of their own. Craig Clay had a shot blocked and Atkinson saw his effort deflected wide after linking up well with Westcarr.
There was relief for Chesterfield when target man Chris Brown, who had come on as a half-time replacement for Billy Paynter, shot tamely at O'Donnell.
O'Donnell was tested again when Woods put a firm drive on target, which the keeper did well to beat away. An angled shot from David Cotterill was also kept out by O'Donnell.
Jack Lester joined the action as a replacement for Evans and was soon involved, firing in a shot which took a deflection wide.
Paul Keegan then tried a shot which was deflected off-target by Neal Trotman and Doncaster scored from the resulting corner.
Cotterill's centre was met by the unmarked Ball - who had only been on the pitch for a matter of seconds - and the youngster's header beat O'Donnell.
As Chesterfield pressed for a late equaliser, Atkinson's effort was deflected off-target and Lester mis-directed a header.
