Sam Togwell became Chesterfield's fifth summer signing when he put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with the Spireites.
The former Scunthorpe man had offers from other clubs following his release from the Iron but Chesterfield's ambition was a big pull.
He said: "Obviously we don't want to be in League Two for too long - I certainly don't - so as a team we need to build and look to get back where we belong.
"I wouldn't have come if I didn't feel that we had a good chance of getting promoted."
The 27-year-old has played much of his career at League One and Championship level, which is exactly where he sees Chesterfield in the future.
"I know I have taken a drop but I was prepared to do it knowing that we'll be pushing for promotion this season and then promotion again after that," he said.
Togwell feels that the quality of the other signings made by the club will help them to achieve their aim.
He added: "I know Marc Richards because I played with him at Barnsley. They're all signings that have experience at a higher level and I think that's important for this team to go forward."
