The Spireites won their second pre-season friendly, beating Matlock Town 5-1 at The Reynolds Stadium on Tuesday night to retain the Banner Jones Cup.
Summer signing Marc Richards, who was making his first appearance in a Chesterfield shirt, scored twice after coming on as a second-half substitute. Scott Boden, Jordan Bowery and Mark Randall also found the net.
After Bowery, Boden and Jonathan Wafula threatened early on, Boden opened the scoring in the 25th minute after the ball rebounded into his path following Jacob Hazel’s cross.
Bowery (40) produced a clinical finish after being put through by Boden and Randall scored a 42nd minute penalty after Wafula was fouled in the area. Just like his effort from the spot at Staveley on Saturday, Randall calmly chipped the ball into the net.
Former Chesterfield player Gareth Davies pulled a goal back for the hosts three minutes after the re-start, beating Richard O’Donnell with a quickly-taken free-kick which left the substitute keeper stranded.
Richards (62) scored with a superb 30-yard free-kick - the ball going just inside the keeper’s left-hand post - and the striker rounded off the scoring from the spot after being brought down inside the area.
Following on from Saturday’s 6-1 win at Staveley, it was another highly satisfying run-out for John Sheridan’s men in front of a crowd of 1,349.
Chesterfield line-up: Lee (O’Donnell 46), Darikwa (Clay 46), Quinn (Wafula 80), Forbes (Whittaker 59), Hird (Waddle 59), Panther (Allott 46), Wafula (Talbot 46), Randall (Togwell 46), Bowery (Hazel 71), Boden (Richards 46), Hazel (Whitaker 46).
*Chesterfield lifted a newly restored trophy. Director Ashley Carson, who is the Sheffield Assay Master, arranged for the work to be undertaken after noting that the trophy was in a poor state of repair last year. The refurbishment was carried out by Camelot Silverware in Sheffield.
