Manager John Sheridan is not interested in making excuses for his side's 1-0 opening day defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

The Spireites dominated the opening half-hour but fell behind when Jack Midson capitalised on a lapse in the Chesterfield defence.

Although Chesterfield should have got a result, Sheridan insists that they need to put that behind them and start winning games.

He said: “The game should have been over and done with; we had a lot of opportunities.

“I expected a lot more from us after we dominated the game in first half.”

“Attacking-wise we were excellent; the game should have been over.

“If we’d have taken our chances we would have won the game.

“We switched off and conceded a goal and it cost us; it cost us big time in the end.”

The manager didn't entertain the idea that his players would need time to bed into life in League Two and expressed the importance of getting off to a good start.

“I’m not looking for any excuses; they’ve all played at this level before and know what it’s about2, Sheridan said, speaking at the pre-match press conference.

“We need to hit the ground running and try and win as many games as possible and get ourselves in a healthy position early on in the season.”
