Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner has spoken about the decision to relieve manager John Sheridan of his duties.

Sheridan was in his fourth season as Chesterfield manager before departing the club this morning.

Speaking to Spireires Player, Chris Turner admitted that it was a tough decision for the club to make.

He said: "It’s never easy; the decision was only made yesterday.

"We have to be conscious of the fact that we were relegated last season, the squad was assembled this summer and out of the four games we’ve played we have yet to win one.

"Added to those factors and one or two others things that were here in the mix, the decision was made."

He added: "John's taken it very professionally as I knew he would do.

"John's record at the club over the three seasons he has been here, winning two trophies, is exceptional in the history of Chesterfield. We as a football club now have to move forward."

Chris point out that it is imperative that the club makes a swift return to League One, commenting: "We must return to League One as quickly as possible - first attempt is what we are after.

"Financially, it’s a big loss dropping down to League Two. To get back into League One and challenge to get into the Championship is something that we want to do and need to do."
