Academy Notes - August 24

24 August 2012

Sponsored by

All the Academy squads from under 9s to under 16s were back in training on August 14th after a two month break. The squads were given a pre-season programme which had to be followed over the month of July. The players follow this programme so that the coaches can work on the technical side of their game rather than focus on fitness when they come into train. The coaches will also work on team shape over the pre-season period so that all players know their individual roles within the team structure.

The majority of the squads play Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United for pre-season friendlies over the next couple of weeks. Normally it would take up to Christmas before the Younger Academy squads start to take on board all the information given to them by their coaches. The majority of these players have trained together all last season so have an appreciation of how each other play so should be up to speed by the time they start training again. Hopefully all the squad players will grow stronger and stronger as the season progresses. The under 16s performed very well at Sheffield United during an early pre-season match, the main thing is to see a progression throughout the season. Competing against good players will only aid the progress of each squad and each individual player.

We aim to develop our players individually and within a team structure over the course of a season. They all develop at different rates, whether it is 6 month, 1 year or over several years during their time playing Academy football. The players who take on board information quickest tend to progress further than their counter part. The player that wants to put in the extra work away from the Academy programme also develops at a greater rate. Eventually these players will progress through the Academy, Youth Team to the first team. It is not easy for these players to maintain this steady progression because each step becomes difficult as they mature. The players with ability and the right mental approach to life and their football will be the most successful ones.
