Imps Defeat Spireites at Sincil Bank

7 October 2017

Chesterfield succumbed to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Lincoln City as goals from Michael Bostwick and an own goal by Andy Kellett won the contest for the hosts.

Substitute Kristian Dennis pulled one back for the Spireites but it wasn’t enough as Lincoln saw out the contest in front of a crowd of over 9,000.

Jack Lester named an unchanged XI from the midweek win at Rotherham United and it was the visitors who had the first promising chance.

A promising break forward by Diego De Girolamo saw him within distance of the penalty area, with one defender to beat he tried to lay the ball on to Robbie Weir who was arriving from the left. However, the ball was misplaced and was taken by the defender.

Seven minutes later the Spireites went behind due to a cruel slice of luck. After a long throw-in was cleared away, Michael Bostwick drove the ball towards goal and a wicked deflection off Bradley Barry directed the ball the past Joe Anyon who had already committed down low to his right.

Another seven minutes later the Imps doubled their advantage. Harry Anderson wriggled free of Scott Wiseman on the left wing and put in a dangerous low cross, Andy Kellett was racing back into the box but was in the wrong place at the wrong time and directed the ball into the net from five yards out.

The Spireites nearly pulled one back from a free kick in the 35th minute through Jordan Flores, who bent the ball deliciously over the wall towards the top left corner, but was denied by an unbelievable save by goalkeeper Josh Vickers, racing across to his right.

For the remainder of the half the Spireites rallied to make one last push for a goal but Vickers and his defence were in inspired form as he punched and turned away several long balls sent into the box to send his side into the break two goals up.

At the restart the hosts began on the front foot. Seven minutes in second half, Anderson burst into the box from the left and found himself one on one with Anyon, who spread himself well and turned the ball behind.

Not long later, Matt Green broke free of Ian Evatt on the right, sent in a great cross for Ollie Palmer who connected well with his head but could only find the crossbar.

Green then had another opportunity a minute later, after a long ball came down to him, he poked the ball past Anyon but into the side netting.

In the 63rd minute the Imps then had a superb opportunity cleared off the line. A corner was sent to back post, Bostwick rose the highest and headed downwards, but it was well cleared off the line by Flores.

Bostwick missed another chance to double his tally, found at the back stick again he met the ball with his head but saw his effort cleared by Chris O’Grady.

Dennis then picked up Kellett’s overhit pass 20 yards out, he switched it to his right foot, but couldn’t direct his effort onto the target.

However, he then had a golden opportunity as fellow substitute Reece Mitchell sent Barry on the overlap into the box, but before he could pull the trigger he was bundled over by Harry Anderson, forcing the referee to point to the spot.

Dennis stepped up and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way, slotting to the left to put the Spireites back in the contest with eight minutes still to play.

The Spireites rallied and pushed for an equaliser, they harassed the Imps defence with several promising long balls and passing moves, but the Imps again held firm.
