Caldwell: "Everyone’s looking forward to the first pre-season friendly."

4 July 2017

Spireites boss Gary Caldwell says that he, his staff and the Chesterfield squad are more than ready for tonight's first pre-season friendly match with Sheffield FC (7.30pm).

Caldwell’s men have been back in training for over two weeks and their fitness levels will be further enhanced with three pre-season games this week, starting with the trip to the Coach and Horses Ground this evening.

Speaking exclusively to iFollow Caldwell said: “I think it’s nice to get back into games, we’ve done all the work we need to in terms of running and physicality.

"Everyone’s looking forward to the first pre-season friendly, but it’s only the first game so we need to take it step by step and we’ve done everything we need to in terms of attack and defence.”

The manager admitted that the majority of the squad will be playing around 45 minutes each tonight and is pleased to report a clean bill of health ahead of the game.

“We’ll be looking more at the performance in terms of how the players play,” he explained. “We’re going to be mixing it up - fielding a new side each half”

"They’ve all applied themselves really well and with the pre-season training - they’re all looking fit and well to start.

“There’s been a couple of niggles but no one’s missed a full day of training so far.”

One player who is not expected to feature is new signing Chris O’Grady.

The striker joined his new team mates for the first time yesterday and Caldwell has confirmed that he will be undertaking his own pre-season programme during his first fortnight with the club.

He added: “We’re delighted to get Chris in and working with his new team mates, although he’s been on an individual programme, he’s been training and warming up with the main squad.

“They’re working as quickly as they can to integrate him into the team but it’ll probably take a week to 10 days.”

Spireites Start Pre-season With Victory

4 July 2017

Chesterfield got their pre-season underway with a victory over non-league Sheffield FC at the Coach and Horses Stadium.

Goals from Ian Evatt, Kristian Dennis, Dion Donohue and Ricky German secured a 4-1 victory for the Spireites.

It was a match that the Spireites were pretty comfortable in and had it not been for the superb performance of Sheffield goalkeeper, Chris Butt, the scoreline could have been much heavier.

Bradley Barry was obstructed on the right flank, from the resulting free-kick Evatt rose highest at the back post to head powerfully past Souter to give the Spireites the lead in the 14th minute.

Another neat passing move saw Barry square the ball to Dennis who was denied by Butt's feet, Charlie Wakefield hit a fierce shot back towards goal which Souter saved again. The second rebound was picked up by Reece Mitchell, he took a touch before he then saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper.

Last season’s top scorer Dennis made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, Connor Dimaio won the ball superbly in midfield, he then slotted in the former Macclesfield Town man who calmly slotted the ball past Souter.

The Spireites continued to press until the interval but were unable to add to their tally.

Chesterfield fielded a new XI for the second half and they didn’t take long to add a third, with Donohue scoring in the 48th minute with a good finish from outside the area after some fine passing.

The home side then pulled a goal back in the 58th minute when a long ball over the defence resulted in a mix up between Sam Hird and Dylan Parkin, Hird’s pass went beyond Parkin and substitute Jack Marsden tapped home from inside the six-yard box.

German came close with two headers, before Delial Brewster pulled an effort wide after Jerome Binnom-Williams’ pull back.

Jordan Sinnott then came close after playing a nice one-two before curling an effort just wide of the right hand post.

German then came close once again in the 78th minute but goalkeeper Butt brilliantly palmed his effort wide.

The young striker didn’t have to wait long for his goal however as three minutes later he tapped home after Iffy Ofoegbu’s pass down the right flank.

Sheffield FC: Butt, Turner, Algar, Turnbull, Varley, Magee, Robson, Travis, Morris, Gascoyne, Gregory.
