Chesterfield continued their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 4-0 away win at Matlock Town, with new signing Gozie Ugwu scoring two first half goals.
The Spireites looked confident and comfortable throughout the game, dominating possession and playing some fine football entertaining an impressive crowd at the DCJ Group Insurance Arena.
The game settled into its pattern early on with Chesterfield enjoying long spells of possession in the Matlock half.
The Spireites pressed high early on which lead to the game’s first chance, energetic midfielder Joe Rowley robbed Matlock captain Adam Yates of the ball inside his own half, played a fine pass into the path of Delial Brewster whose effort was well saved by goalkeeper Phil Barnes.
The deadlock was broken however moments later in the 12th minute by striker Ugwu, a new arrival from Woking. He was able to find space in the six-yard box following a cleverly worked corner routine with a fine flick finding Ugwu, who headed easily into the bottom corner.
It did not take long for Chesterfield to double their advantage with another new arrival, Jerome Binnom-Williams charging his way through midfield, playing a perfectly timed pass for Ugwu who notched his second of the game with a composed finish into the far corner three minutes later.
Chesterfield continued to dominate the first half with Matlock rarely allowed any sustained possession. The two new front men, Brewster and Ugwu particularly impressed, with quick movements causing numerous problems for Matlock’s defense.
Just as he did against Sheffield FC, manager Gary Caldwell brought out a new XI at half time in an attempt to give valuable minutes to his players.
The second half took some time to spring into life but was ignited by youngster Reece Mitchell in the 61st minute. He found space on the edge of the box following a poor Matlock clearance, he beat his man with a fine piece of skill allowing him to tuck the ball into the far corner.
The goal seemed to relax the Chesterfield substitutes with another goal coming in quick succession. Academy player Ify Ofoegbu picked up the ball on the right and produced a perfect cross for Ricky German to get his second this pre-season and make it four for Caldwell’s men.
With the result in the bag for Chesterfield, Matlock began to produce more going forward. They were however denied through a combination of good defending and goalkeeping from Dylan Parkin in particular who looked confident in his second half outing.
With 15 minutes remaining manger Caldwell gave debuts to youth team pair, Jack Holmes and Dylan Hand, who replaced Jay Smith and Ofoegbu. Holmes nearly made an immediate impact, producing the cross of the match to striker German who was denied a second by the crossbar.
Chesterfield remained in charge in the final moments of the game, maintaining a high tempo throughout the match and earned themselves a deserved victory, making it eight goals in two pre-season games.
