Spireites 0 Tykes 2

Posted on: Wed 04 Aug 2010

Jack Lester recovered from landing awkwardly in the Derby County game to resume up front for Chesterfield this afternoon in the pre-season friendly against Barnsley.

The line-up had an "opening day of the season" look to it, being thus:

Lee

Hunt, Breckin, Ford, Morris

Talbot, Allott, Mattis, Whitaker

Lester, Davies.

Subs: Redmond, Clay, Gray, Boden, Bowery, Niven, Granger, Adcock, Darikwa.

Chesterfield started the brighter, forcing a corner in the second minute. Talbot compelled Steele to save with his legs on 4 and good possession from the home side led to a Hunt cross on 10 that Shackell was forced to put behind.

Barnsley came forward for the first time on 13 and Hammill drone Butterfield's pass at goal, but Lee held the ball well. McEveley turned and shot smartly on 15 but Lee was again well placed to save.

Barnsley were having an equal share of the game by the half-hour stage. Lee had to tip a Louvre effort over on 28 for safety's sake, while a Hassall mistake on 30 allowed Allot to find Hunt; his cross was just too high for Lester to get a decent contact.

Gray had the Tykes' best chance of the half on 34 when Foster supplied him aboutr eight yards out, and central, but Breckin did enough behind him to prevent his having a clear chance, and the shot went wide. At the other end, Davies had the Spireites' best chance when breaking into the Barnsley box, but the ball seemed to get stuck between his feet, and he couldn't fashion much of a shot with either foot.

Halftime: 0-0

Mark Robins made a couple of halftime substitutions, replacing Butterfield with Colace and Deveney with Neumann. The Tykes seemed to go up a gear and put Chesterfield under pressure after Foster became the first player to clear a stand with a clearance at the new stadium . Hunt was cool on 50 when taking a touch on his own six yard box before clearing as Barnsley's eager forwards bore down on him.

A good Neumann pass on 56 allowed Hammill a shot that he might have done better with, but Barnsley were getting closer. Indeed, they opened the scoring on 63, albeit in a slightly lucky fashion. Gray had a header from point blank well saved by Lee and it fell to Neumann, who contrived to fire against the bar from a yard out. Unfortunately, it came straight off the bar to Gray again, who made no mistake from inches out.

Barnsley continued to press and Ford worked hard to hold up a Hammill break on 69, but the defender was relieved to see Louvre blast the loose ball over the bar. Lester left Shackell holding a leg and shot across the box, and the Barnsley defender seemed convinced that Jack had fouled, but the officials saw no infringement. Lester put a Davies cross narrowly wide at the near post as Chesterfield pushed for an equaliser.

Jordan Bowery replaced Mattis on 73 to play wide right, with Talbot going wide left and Whitaker moving central.Bowery did enough to keep his full-back busy and showed promise in this new area. Boden replaced Lester with ten minutes left. Gray had a great chance to wrap the game up but headed over from around six yards on 83.

Dan Gray replaced Hunt on 85. With a minute to go Barnsley sealed it; a misplaced Allott pass found Dickinson, who rounded the stranded Lee with aplomb but then made unaccountably heavy weather of completing the scoring, as Ford got back to the line in an effort to keep the ball out.
