Tamworth 0 Spireites 2

Posted on: Tue 08 Mar 2011

Phil Tooley was  at Tamworth

Spireites faced Conference National side Tamworth at The Lamb Ground. After a draw at Alfreton, a win at Matlock and a nine goal thriller against Derby County, John Sheridan's side will no doubt be looking for a victory combined with a miserly showing from the defence.

Jack Lester the only fit first teamer missing tonight -  he landed awkwardly on Saturday and missed training yesterday.

All Blue tonight (against all red). Bowery up top with Boden on the left of midfield and Ford has the armband.

Two hundred or so from Town saw the hosts have the first couple of attacks but nothing troubled Redmond. Hunt's free kick was caught by the keeper with little difficulty. Grof miscued a hack away but Davies was unable to bring the ball to heal. Rodman hit high and wide as the ten minute marker passed with little in the shape of action to report. The game's really got a pre-season feel to it, I suppose unsurprisingly!

Davies had the first real chance, Redmond rolled to Morris, he passed long and Jorgensen misjudged, Davies picked up, angled on the left, but Grof stuck a leg out to save. Chesterfield won the first corner after Morris's free kick ricocheted off the wall. Gray and Morris didn't conjure any magic from the short routine. Tait shot over after receiving just outside the box as, with 20 played, the contest began to step up a gear.

Talbot took a heavy knock from ex Stag Perry but receovered to carry on after treatment. Grof had to get down low to save at the feet of Bowery and Morris hit a 25 yard free kick just over after Marshall had upended Davies. Sheridan, Jake of that ilk, hit over from a good position after Smith had picked him out and the same man then hit high from a gilt-edged position after some less than perfect defending by The Spireites.

Davies and Bowery combined well on the box-edge but Davies hit high and wide from the left side when the opportunity arose. Mitchell replaced Wylde for The Lambs. Bowery had a shot blocked after a neat Davies pass. Marshall headed over from a free kick as half time approached and Jorgensen hit high at full stretch.

On at the break - Breckin, Allott, Mattis and Whitaker for Ford, Gray, Niven and Boden. Talbot up front, Bowery wide. Morley and Bradley for Barrow and Smith for the home side.

Bowery got his head to a corner but Grof had a simple task to gather as Spireites four subs, all likely starters for the Barnet game, looked to add something to the team. Whitaker hit an acute angled effort wide. Grof pulled out a top save when Bowery flicked on for Talbot whose firm shot was tipped over for a corner.

Tamworth made three more changes, off went Perry, Thomas and Sheridan replaced by Wright, Farrell and Fairclough. Two minutes later Lee and Timmins came on for Chesterfield with Redmond and Bowery making way. Morris went to midfield with Timmins at left back.

Jorgensen had a long ranger as the teams reshuffled after the changes and he followed that up with a closer effort moments later.  Rodman drilled a free kick within a foot of the bar as the home side enjoyed their best spell. Davies shot from a wide position and his effort missed the far post by inches as the lights came on with 20 minutes to play.

The best move of the game should have brought Chesterfield a goal. Whitaker burst through the middle, slipped it to Talbot who squared for Davies, unmarked on the six and with a gaping goal ahead, but his first time effort flew over the bar. Talbot forced a save and from the resulting corner on 73, the ball fell to DAVIES whose shot took a massive deflection to wrong foot Grof.

Lambs 0 Spireites 1

Redmon won Lambs' first corner after a great shot clipped a defender but the flag kick caused no problems.

With 81 played, WHITAKER slid the ball beyond Grof after Talbot's inch perfect ball in from the right.

Lambs 0 Spireites 2

Talbot forced another good save from Grof, who plamed out from a corner after the striker found space on the left and unleashed a fine shot.

Fairclough hit high from close range, but at full stretch, as Chesterfield neared a clean sheet. Fairclough had the ball in the net on 90 but an offside flag denied him the score.
