Chesterfield's poor defensive frailties proved to be costly as two early goals set the Imps up for their sixth victory of the season. Youth team manager Dave Bentley was missing key players this week as Sandy Moller, Ben Watkis and Jake Handbury all remained sidelined meaning only three players were named amongst the substitutes. Although, Bentley was boosted by the return of captain Craig Clay who took an unfamiliar role at the peak of the Spireite midfield diamond.
Lincoln started the match in impressive style and found themselves a goal ahead after just a mere 78 seconds. Immediately dispossessed from the kick off, Chesterfield were directly on the back foot as the home side wasted no time in leading an early attack. A testing cross in from the right hand side was only half cleared after a free Imps header was allowed on target. The initial header was blocked but the follow up wasn't so fortunate.
Things went from bad to worse for the blues as yet another cross caught the Spireites off guard and allowed Lincoln to double their lead on eight minutes. Lack-lustre defending allowed a close range effort to hit the back of the net from another right hand side cross.
The match did see a third goal minutes later but Jimmy Adcock's effort was ruled out by the linesman. Chesterfield used this attack as a stepping stone to kick start their game as Sam Smith began to test the Imps' back four with his dangerous crosses and despite Jordan Burrow and Adcock's best efforts, the scoreline remained in Lincoln's favour.
The home side struck again on the half hour mark as it seemed not to be Chesterfield's day. A neatly executed corner met the head of an Imps player and rattled the bar before being followed up and pushed over the line despite Ryan Granger's best efforts to clear.
Chesterfield retaliated through Jimmy Adcock as he was quick to snap up the loose ball from Smith's well worked shot. Smith continued to cause problems as his crosses were shedding light for the Spireites.
Adcock came close to manufacturing a Chesterfield comeback when his first time strike off Smith's first time cross forced a decent save from the Lincoln number one, just after the restart. Burrow tested the goalkeeper again in the air, but failed to deliver the goods moments later.
Easily Chesterfield's brightest player of the match, Sam Smith had to leave the field of play as a routine tackle left the winger in some discomfort. The Spireites' promising second half didn't cease and Clay almost managed to pull a goal back for the blues, when his neat flick struck the post from a well worked corner.
Darikwa was another who left the field of play adding to an ever growing injury list for Dave Bentley.
A tense last 10 minutes was guaranteed, as Chesterfield pulled back that ever searching second goal that they had been in quest of since the 38th minute. Chris Tingay's long throw fell to substitute Josh Wright who rifled a decent effort goal bound before Burrow's decisive flick made certain.
It looked as if for the second week running Chesterfield had made a remarkable comeback. With just eight minutes remaining Burrow scored, what seemed his second of the match, but the referee ruled out the Spireites' second disallowed goal of the game when an infringement on the goalkeeper was reported to have taken place.
Substitutes Wright and Shamus Beaglehole had half chances at the depth to equalise but Lincoln held on to their one goal advantage to claim all three points in a disappointing Spireite performance.
