Martin Gritton scored a brace of goals to keep up a healthy set of results for the Spireites reserve team in their latest outing at Saltergate against Championship side Coventry City which ended in a 2-1 win for Chesterfield.

Chesterfield opened the scored early on with Gritton's first, a Beckonesque lob from fully 30 yards out when the Spireites striker was quick to notice that the Coventry goalkeeper had strayed off his line.

It was route one at its best as Mark Crossley's accurate punt found Terrell Lewis to feed Martin Gritton for his audacious finish, the ball dropping nicely to nestle in the back of the net.

Action from the game at murky Saltergate

The visitors equalised half way through the first half thanks to a spectacular own goal from Chesterfield's Kevin Austin.  His attempt to boot clear a dangerous looking ball into the goal area with his right foot flew like a bullet into the roof of the net after an unfortunate last minute bobble.

Plenty of endeavour from both sides in a game that ebbed and flowed from end to end before Martin Gritton edged the game Chesterfield's way with fifteen minutes to go.  Craig Clay's precise left wing cross was turned into the net from close range by Martin Gritton for his second goal of the match.

A number of substitutions late on to give youth team members some match experience didn't weaken the Spireites efforts from picking up another good result.  In 13 games the side has won 10, drawn 2 and lost just one.

Mark Crossley 0910Player coach Mark Crossley said: "Despite their understandable disappointment at not getting regular first team football the lads continue to show a great attitude."

"It was a very competitive game which contained some good stuff at time."
