Spireites 3 Bantams 1

Posted on: Tue 19 Jan 2010

Chesterfield youth team, sponsored by David C Jones Insurance Services, came from behind to seek revenge on the Bradford side that upset the Spireites' opening day of the season. After a one sided youth alliance leage match back in August and a 4-3 defeat, Chesterfield were determined not to repeat their disappointing performance that day.

With one change from the side that beat Darlington last weekend, Chesterfield were looking to regain some momentum. Jake Handbury was sidelined with an ankle problem, meaning Chris Tingay slotted in at right back.

Chesterfield's lack-lustre defending in recent games had caused Dave Bentley's side serious problems and the visitors almost added to that after just two minutes. Bradford executed a neat freekick into the Chesterfield box where it was met by a claret and amber shirt, but the effort strayed wide to the relief of the blues.

Tendayi Darikwa slid through on five minutes to mark the first Spireite chance, but the attacking midfielder couldn't keep his shot down after Jordan Burrow and Ben Watkis' combined headers played through Darikwa.

This chance proved to be costly as the visitors took the lead moments later when another freekick put the Spireites under pressure. This time the deadly set piece came from the right hand side and as the ball was played in it appeared to go through the penalty box and come off defender Sam Clare's head as the ball went past the defeated Scott Webb.

The Bantams almost found the net again but were to be denied by the woodwork. A testing ball delivered into the Chesterfield box between Sandy Moller and his goalkeeper forced the defender into a difficult clearance. The follow up was struck with venom as it rattled the bar and bounced back out to safety.

Despite the unfortunate goal and the visitor's early pressure, Chesterfield kept their composure and raised their game.

Sam Smith's attacking run fed through Watkis, whose shot lacked direction and went straight at the goalkeeper.

Minutes later and Craig Clay had a shot denied from the fully stretched Bradford number one when a scrappy corner found its way to the Spireite captain who looked to get his side back in the game.

A classic Chesterfield move initiated by left back Ryan Granger, involved a one-two between Jimmy Adcock and Darikwa, with the latter coming close to hitting the target.

Action at Warminster Road

The home side's dangerous pressure paid off just ten minutes before half time, when the Spireites levelled the score up through winger Adcock. Webb's long goalkick up field met the head of Burrow, who flicked the ball to fellow strike partner Watkis. The Spireite number 10 linked up with Darikwa before Burrow was in control of the ball again. Adcock's overlapping run that completely caught the Bantams napping, was met with a first time left footed shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Dave Bentley's words of inspiration at the half time interval certainly did the trick as within two minutes of the re start the match had turned full circle.

Chris Tingay's lofted cross into the Bradford box via Adcock's head met the fierce volley of Darikwa to put the Spireites into the lead.

The Bantams had a chance to level on 58 minutes. Chesterfield's inability to mark players off yet another set piece resulted in a free header straying wide of Webb's goal that could have easily damaged the Spireites lead.

Josh Wright's corner picked out Moller inside the visitor's area and with the ball in the air, the central defender's stylish overhead strike just missed the target.

Bradford's hopes of salvaging anything out of the match were put to rest with three minutes remaining. Moller's hard tackle on the Bantam striker was cleared up field, with the visitors feeling a foul had been committed. Despite their petitions the match continued as Adcock and Darikwa linked up well to play substitute Jordan Edridge in on goal. Edridge stayed composed to end the move with a neat finish.

The Spireites travel back up north again next weekend to face Hartlepool United for their last league match before the Christmas break.
