Chesterfield: 2 Wigan Athletic: 1
With an impressive 100% unbeaten record in all cup competitions already this season, Chesterfield showed no signs of slipping up with a convincing victory over Wigan Athletic at Warminster Road.
The Spireites welcomed back defender Sam Clare who had not played a competitive match in eight weeks due to the injury sustained against Rotherham United in September, that saw Clare sent away for medical attention part way through the match. Josh Wright also returned to the squad after overcoming an injury that had saw the striker miss the last couple of matches.
It wasn't all good news for Dave Bentley prior to kick off though, as defenders Sandy Moller and Gerome Palmer were both out of the squad due to various problems.
Chesterfield started the match is traditional Spireite fashion and went at the visitors immediately from the whistle. Bentley's side, as often is the case, were rewarded for their positive start to the match with a goal after only just five minutes through striker Jordan Burrow.
Sam Smith's persistence to close down players early on paid off when the pacey winger forced an error out of the Latics left back and then proceeded to attack the visitors goal, before pulling the ball back to Burrow who calmly struck the ball past the opposition goalkeeper from six yards.
Chesterfield didn't hold on to their early lead very long however, when a mix up at the Spireite back resulted in a failed clearance leaving the Wigan striker enough space to strike from the edge of the box to beat Scott Webb at his front post.
Smith again used his speed to cut inside the Latics defensive before hitting the ball wide as the number seven failed to get around the ball.
Chesterfield had picked up on Wigan's indecisive goalkeeper and Ben Watkis almost pounced on a golden opportunity, when poor goalkeeping left Watkis with an open goal, but unfortunately the striker couldn't get enough on the shot and the ball struck the post.
The Blues were easily playing the better football of the two sides and it was no surprise when the Spireites again took the lead on 25 minutes. Jimmy Adcock broke in on the left and picked out Tendayi Darikwa for the simplest of finishes from close range.
Last weekend's goal scoring hero Chris Tingay was beginning to cause the visitors a headache alongside Smith on the right hand side, with both players creating some threatening football.
Adcock almost latched onto one of Tingay/Smith's move, but couldn't quite produce the kind of shot he would have hoped for.
The Spireites thought their lead was further increased just five minutes before the half time, when some superb football from Craig Clay and Darikwa freed Watkis through for a one on one opportunity with the goalkeeper, with Watkis coming out on top, but luckily for the Wigan defensive Watkis was denied by the offside flag.
With the match lacking any real certainty to where the result would eventually lie, the second half looked set to be a testing time for both sides.
Just ten minutes after the break, Watkis initiated an attack, which eventually ended in Darikwa taking over and hitting wide.
Chesterfield continued their impressive passing football into the second half and a great move involving midfield duo Clay and Adcock, played in Ryan Granger, whose powerful run was finished with an impressive strike that would have most defiantly been goal bound if it wasn't for a deflection.
Watkis and Matt Needham couldn't quite make the most of a Spireite freekick, but as the ball came out, Captain Clay followed the chance up with a shot that flew over the bar.
Wigan weren't just to sit on the defeat and almost came close to levelling the match 15 minutes from the end. With Webb out of position, a crossed ball was dealt with by Tingay before any orange shirts could pounce.
The Blues retaliated instantly, with a quick counter attack led by Darikwa and involved some neat work by substitute Wright before Darikwa sawhis shot saved by the goalkeeper.
Appeals were screamed at the referee for a late penalty by the Wigan players as they claimed Webb had committed a foul in the penalty box during a Latics attack.
Chesterfield now go through to the third round of the Youth Alliance Cup to maintain their 100% unbeaten record in cup competitions this season.
