Youth team beat league leaders

Posted on: Sat 07 Nov 2009

York City 2 Chesterfield 3

The Spireites youth team, sponsored by David C Jones Insurance Services, bounced back from a disappointing league defeat last weekend against Hull City to rain victorious over league leaders York City, despite leaving it till late to claim all three points.

A late tactical decision due to Sandy Moller pulling out of the starting eleven prior to kick off with a back injury meant a last minute change around with Jake Handbury slotting in at right back and Chris Tingay taking up the centre half position.

Despite Chesterfield taking the lead in the FA Youth Cup after an astonishing 10 seconds in midweek, the Spireites could have easily been a goal down in first minute against the Yorkies when a free header narrowly missed the target from an early York corner.

It didn't take long however, for the home side to create another attack, but this time they did find the target and punished the Spireites for lack lusting defending. With just four minutes played a neat one-two by the York City strikers easily made their way through the Spireite defence to effortlessly stroke the ball past Scott Webb from close range.

Chesterfield struggled to find second gear in the opening stages and again came under threat from the ever increasing York attacks, but Webb pulled off a terrific save to deny another early strike.

The visitors finally strung together an attack, when Sam Smith's corner picked out the head of Matt Needham, but the central defender couldn't direct his effort on target and headed over the bar.

Needham had a similar effort ten minutes later, but again failed to test the goalkeeper despite a free header off Smith's corner.

Chesterfield seemed to be lifted by Needham's brace of chances and drew the match level on 36 minutes through in form midfielder Jimmy Adcock 0809 Tingay initiated a deep attack that involved Tendayi Darikwa before Adcock came in and hit a drive across the York number one, which went into the net with a little help from some poor goalkeeping.

That lead was short lived when York were again a goal up three minutes later when errors at the Blues back gifted the Minstermen an easy goal. A shot across Webb from the left was too much for the Spireite keeper to hold on to as the loose ball found its way to the feet of a York striker who couldn't miss to regain the home sides lead.

York came out for the second half the stronger side and could have extended their lead further but fortunately Webb matched their efforts to deny any further hard work for the Spireites.

Chesterfield struggled to string anything of real danger together and didn't look like the side that put four past local rivals Mansfield Town on Tuesday night, until a tactical change in the 70th minute seemed to have a dramatic effect on the match.

Jordan BurrowWithin one minute of Shamus Beaglehole taking to the field, the Spireites again pulled the match level when a quick set piece caught York City off guard and Jordan Burrow hit a ferocious volley to leave the goalkeeper with no chance.

Chris Tingay 0809This goal gave Chesterfield a new lease of life and left the home side on the back foot with Smith and Beaglehole coming close to turning the whole match around.

As the game progressed, it appeared that the outcome could only go one way and it did with seven minutes to play when Tingay's strike off a set piece completed an impressive comeback by the Spireites.
