Smith and Burrow on target as youths beat Iron

Posted on: Mon 19 Oct 2009

Scunthorpe United 1  Chesterfield 2

Sam Smith and Jordan Burrow's superb first half strikes were enough to give the Spireites victory over a physical Scunthorpe side who haven't managed a win in over five weeks.

Jordan Edridge was the only change from the starting 11 side that defeated Kidderminster Harriers in midweek, replacing the injured Ben Watkis.

Without either team really having much time to settle down, it was Chesterfield that found the first opening on goal, when Sandy Moller's through ball found Jordan Edridge, but the Iron's number one anticipated the run accordingly to block the effort for a Spireite corner.

From the resulting corner Matt Needham came close to making it two in two matches, but his close range chance was blasted over after Sam Smith's neat delivery.

Sam SmithNeedham's near miss was soon forgotten when just a minute later the visitors had taken the lead through pacey forward Sam Smith.

Edridge's hard tackle set up Smith with a one on one situation and only the goalkeeper to beat, but with the coolest of finishes Smith stayed composed to put the Spireites a goal ahead.

Jordan BurrowChesterfield's one goal advantage was soon taken away from then on the 20th minute mark, when a quick free kick caught the Spireites off guard and levelled the score to everyone's amazement.

Dave Bentey's side shrugged off Scunthorpe's comeback hopes just two minutes later, when Moller's perfectly swung free kick picked out Jordan Burrow, who out muscled his defender to execute an exceptional header into the back of he net.

Burrow's hunger for goal continued and his closing down of loose balls almost gifted Edridge with a goal, when his deflected effort caught the goalkeeper off guard.

Chesterfield's attacking flair took an unexpected dip when the home side mounted a bit of pressure, which forced Webb into making a save from a near range header.

Midweek hero Tendayi Darikwa came close to giving the Spireites a two goal cushion just before half time, when a close range effort brought a quick reaction save from the goalkeeper.

Chesterfield came out napping after the break, with Webb again being called into action when a deflected shot almost caused the Spireites problems.

The Iron had another chance five minutes later, when a cross on the left dipped over Webb, but Ryan Granger was on hand to clear the threat off the line.

The Spireites seemed to get back into their stride again and goal scorers Smith and Burrow were looking to add to their tally with on target opportunities.

Granger's vision off a deep free kick teed up substitute Chris Tingay to score his first of the season, but unfortunately he could only manage the side netting.

Bentley's side picked up another deserved three points, which now takes the Spireites unbeaten stretch in the league to eight matches.
