Burrow early strike cancelled out

Posted on: Tue 13 Oct 2009

Chesterfield 1  Notts County 1

After a promising start the Spireites were forced to share the points against Notts County

Despite limping off during last week's epic clash against Oldham, Ryan Granger returned to the starting line up with Tendayi Darikwa, who also missed the 4-3 victory at Chapel Road.

In typical Spireite fashion, Chesterfield took the lead before the Magpies had even had chance to catch their breath.

Jordan BurrowSam Smith's pinpointed cross on the right picked out Jordan Burrow, who took the chance with ease to head Chesterfield into the lead after just 40 seconds.

The visitors retaliated four minutes later when the County number seven used his blistering pace to get between the two Chesterfield centre half's, but wasted the chance from close range.

County again came close to scoring when the repeated offender once again broke through the Spireite defence, but Granger was on par to put an end to the dangerous attack.

Meanwhile up the opposite end Chesterfield were lacking any real attacking flair, but a quick break caught the visitors on the back foot and gifted Josh Wright the chance to double the lead. But the County goalkeeper was more than prepared for the chipped effort and denied Wright from making it two goals in two league games.

That was to be Wright's final contribution to the game as an injury just four minutes later resulted in the striker leaving the pitch for treatment and was replaced by Shamus Beaglehole.

Smith came close after a powerful run, with Scott Webb tipping over from an opposing freekick up the other end, but the score line remained unaffected going into half time interval.

A penalty box scramble just after the break masterminded from Smith's corner almost resulted in a County player putting the ball into his own net, but his blushes were saved thanks to the woodwork.

Michael Johnson's side continued to cause Chesterfield concerns at the back and should have been level 10 minutes after the re start when poor defending gave County an opening, but the visitors hit wide.

Dave Bentley's injury list was added to when Granger pulled up with leg problem and was replaced by Gerome Palmer.

With Granger leaving the field, the team had a quick shuffle with Sandy Moller pushing into midfield and Jimmy Adcock dropping back into the absent left back position.

The Spireites hardly had chance to adapt to their new shape as the visitors struck level within minutes of Granger's departure. A lethal cross was neatly finished by the County striker to put the visitors back on track.

Action from the game

Moller had a late opportunity to give the Spireites the victory, but his volley lacked the direction that his header did last week.

A draw was a fair result and Chesterfield still remain unbeaten since their opening game of the season.
