Bentley: We created problems ourselves

Posted on: Mon 17 Aug 2009

After a disappointing performance, not to mention result, Chesterfield youth manager Dave Bentley gives his personal opinion of yesterday's defeat against Bradford City.

"Obviously we're disappointed starting the season off getting beat 4-2, it sounds as if we got annihilated but in fact we've created the problems ourselves by not defending properly."

"The first goal, Sam Clare's not tackled on the edge of the box like he should do. The second goal, the guy gets a free shot from a corner, no marking. The third goal, it comes into our box comes back out and gets a free shot on goal, with no challenge around the ball. The fourth one just topped it, the boys had a shot and the keepers had a bit of a horrid time, it's gone through his fingers and dropped in."

Despite the Spireites conceding three first half strikes, Chesterfield appeared to come out a much improved side in the second half after Bentley's half time talk.

"It was a case of trying to sort the problems out that we had got, about not making challenges more than anything, about being more aggressive, looking after one another, passing the ball a bit better and I thought we set off on the front foot really well. But after eight minutes we concede a goal like we did for the fourth one and your find yourself 4-1 down. At that stage heads went down, which was a disappointing thing and body language was bad"

"But we have got things to work on and I hope it's the biggest kick up the back side that there going to get in their footballing career. They've got to accept that they can't just walk out onto a football field, even if you've won a championship last year, you can't just walk out on a football field and expect things to just happen , you've got to make it happen and we just didn't do that."

Despite the negatives, Bentley is looking ahead to next week's opposition, Hartlepool United.

"We will be working hard on the training ground obviously. I think that they [the players] will go away and seriously think about their own performances today and hopefully we can put things right next weekend against Hartlepool.
