Oadby Town 1 Chesterfield 4

Posted on: Tue 04 Aug 2009

After a below par first half Chesterfield came from behind to eventually cruise to a comfortable victory at Topps Park. Dave Bentley used 17 different players over the course of the 90 minutes, but it was the three strikers within the squad that were the deciding feature.

Last year's fixture resulted in the Spireites finishing the match with a score line similar to that of Monday night, but this year, Bentley's newly formed side struggled to produce the kind of score line that they were more than capable of.

.Midfielder Jordan Edridge, who looks set to become a regular on the right, wasted the first chance of many for the Spireites after just five minutes of play. Edridge couldn't keep his early effort down as he hooked the ball over the crossbar following a tidy set piece from Jimmy Adcock via Craig Clay.

Chesterfield continued their early pressure and Sandy Moller's magnificently lofted ball managed to drop deep behind the home side's defence, giving Chris Tingay sufficient time to cross. The wing back's delivery picked out Tendayi Darikwa, who squandered from close range.

As it appeared to resemble a scene from Groundhog Day, the Spireites continued to create attacking moves, but fritter away any real opportunity to score time and time again with Josh Wright and Edridge being Chesterfield's main offenders.

Despite things clearly not going their way, Chesterfield kept their composure and tried to maintain their regular passing game.

With Oadby rarely venturing into the Spireites half, Moller pushed further up, and again picked out Tingay on the right, whose recent performances have awarded him praise amongst Chesterfield fans. Tingay's cross into the penalty box was gathered by Jordan Burrow, whose first touch let him down and was soundly dealt with by the Oadby goalkeeper.

It took the home side until the half hour mark to produce their second effort on goal forcing Scott Webb to palm away at his near post from a powerful driven shot.

.In the 37th minute, Darikwa lead a Chesterfield break, with his delivery somehow finding Wright, who, instead of lacing the ball tried to side foot his effort and saw his chance blocked.

Sloppy passing and communication errors were ever increasing for the Spireites, but Adcock's testing 25 yard strike on the left almost put all that to bed. After Tingay's right sided free kick was cleared, the ball eventually found its way to Adcock, who forced the Oadby goalkeeper into his first real testing save of the half just two minutes before the break.

Totally against the run of the play, as is much the case in football, Oadby took the lead with only their third shot of the match. The Poachers pacey number four, who had tested Moller earlier on in the game, beat defender Ryan Granger to the ball and coolly chipped the ball over the already committed Webb.

.Bentley made six half time changes in the hope that Chesterfield's blushes would be saved and it didn't take long for the effect to come into place.

Just eight minutes of the re start and the Spireites were level with the simplest example of route one football your likely ever to witness. Webb's lengthy goal kick was met by the head of Burrow, whose flick on played Wright through for a one on one chance.

.Good communication between the two strikers meant that Oadby's effort in attempting to play offside were ripped apart, as Wright easily knocked the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper, to take his pre season tally to three goals in four matches.

Minutes later, Chesterfield should have had the opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot, as Palmer, who was still up field from a previous corner, played Burrow through, but strangely enough an Oadby defender jumped on the ball mistaking the current game for that of a rugby match, but despite appeal the referee waved play on.

A great one-two between Ben Watkis and Wright, left Burrow with just the keeper to beat, but unfortunately the goalkeeper managed to a leg out to deny, what seemed to be, a certain goal scoring opportunity.

.Burrow's hard grafting eventually paid off, when in the 65th minute his interception, after an Oadby mistake, gave him the chance of putting the Spireites a head. The striker kept his cool to calmly side foot the ball past the Oadby number one.

Chesterfield were not completely guaranteed of the victory and confusion at the back between Webb and Palmer almost cost them the lead. As Webb came to collect a crossed ball, the Chesterfield defender clashed in mid air with his own player to result in the ball being lost; fortunately it was defended out for a corner.

Winger Sam Smith's creative run down the right was finished with a chasing ball for Wright to stretch his legs to.

.The striker wasted no time on ball, as his early delivery was met by Watkis, whose volley was clinically finished to extend the Spireites score.

With the game all but over, Burrow added another to Chesterfield's tally just moments before the full time whistle.

Wright, again the provider, picked out strike partner Burrow, whose right foot volley at the back post left the goalkeeper no chance, to score his second of the match.
