Teversal FC 0 Chesterfield 7

Posted on: Fri 31 Jul 2009

After two previous David and Goliath battles, both against senior non league establishments, Chesterfield finally encountered someone their own size and didn't just match them, they outplayed them. In a seven goal thriller at the Grange, which saw six different players make the score sheet, the Spireites dominated the game from the first whistle till the last.

Chesterfield, as is their way, began prettily and were immediately seeking out the darting runs of striker Josh Wright, who was absent for the Spireites defeat at the weekend. Midfield duo, Craig Clay and Tendayi Darikwa were the sole architects behind Chesterfield's initial movements.

Early defending to be done

As the visitors pressed on early, sending attackers forward, resources were stretched at the back and this enabled Teversal to create a quick counter attack. Fortunately, Gerome Palmer managed to apply enough pressure to throw the Tevie striker's aim.

Attacking winger Jordan Edridge, who was making his first start for the Spireites, created the game's first real chance. Sam Smith's explosive run on the left was finished with Edridge's right footed shot, but the youngster struggled to make his effort count and it hit side netting as a result.

Smith was again involved in another fine piece of attacking football, as the left sided player shrewdly cut in to the centre of the park and teed  up Clay for a terrific 35 yard effort that was sent over the crossbar.

Despite Teversal struggling to find any real rhythm to the match, the home side were just inches away from breaking the deadlock 17 minutes in. A darting run from the Teversal captain topped his terrific solo effort off with a well driven shot across a fully stretched Scott Webb, luckily for the Spireites the ball struck the post and not the back of the net.

Chesterfield's relentless pressure did eventually pay off and Josh Wright proved his worth after a frustrating offside spell. A mistake within the Teversal defence on the half hour mark led Wright to produce an exquisite finish from close range.

Wright should have had a second just moments later, when Chris Tingay's long throw singled out the goalscorer in the oppositions box. The small striker weaved inside, but his left foot strike was turned round the post for a corner.

From the resulting Edridge corner, Chesterfield increased their lead through a Sandy Moller header. Edridge's delivery was to perfection, as Moller was able to use his time to direct his header into the top right hand corner, leaving the stranded goalkeeper helpless.

Just before half time, Chesterfield's attacking midfielder Darikwa, came thrusting through the flank. His incisive pass found Wright, who had divided the home side's defence, but couldn't quite get his shot on target as his effort flew over the bar.

The interval didn't slow down Chesterfield's electric pace as the tables were now turned, compared to previous matches, with the Spireites producing raids galore.

Some slick one touch football by the Spireites, which was the key to their League glory last season, gave substitute Ben Watkis the chance to show his acrobatically side off with some overhead dramatics, unfortunately the shot didn't match the effort.

Webb's participation in the match was becoming more limited, but the ex Notts County player was showing signs of maturing with quick, slick distribution and more confidence in the air.

Wright, who had been causing nuisance every time he touched the ball, had another fine effort palmed away, after substitute Jimmy Adcock was beginning to frustrate the Teversal defence.

Wright's persistence finally paid off, as he was rewarded with his second ever goal in a blue shirt. Again, Darikwa and Clay's communication was outstanding, as the two second year scholars laid the foundation for the ex Derby County player to score with a crisp shot.

Moments later, Wright had the opportunity to seal his hat trick, but rapid intervention meant that the prospect of three goals had gone.

Another corner, another goal, and yet another central defender, but this time it was first year scholar Matt Needham that found the back of the net. Adcock's well worked corner picked out Needham, who attacked the front post and fired in from close range.

Two minutes later and Chesterfield were five goals up, with Edridge scoring his first goal for four years, a record the winger will be glad is broken. Wright, yet again, was involved in the build up play, leaving Edridge with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Edridge's service was appreciated, as Bentley gave the youngster a rest just seconds after his goal and rewarded under 16's player Ellis Wall with vital youth team action.

When Tendayi Darikwa, mobile, unselfish and intelligent throughout, added another to Chesterfield's score, it was no more than the number nine deserved. His determined run down the left was finished with a fierce shot from an acute angle.

With just one minute remaining, Teversal were begging not to concede another, unfortunately for them Burrow had other ideas and scored Chesterfield's seventh with a mighty header from six yards.

Chesterfield (4-4-2): Webb, Tingay, Moller (Needham 46), Palmer,  Granger (Clare 46), Clay, Smith (Adcock 46), Edridge (Wall 74), Darikwa, Burrow (Watkis 46), Wright
