It was a case of third time unlucky for Chesterfield's youth team. After two previous aborted attempts to get this third round cup-tie on due to the snow and ice, the game finally went ahead at Warminster Road on Tuesday 17 February 2009 but in the end it's Darlington who progress to the next round of the Puma Youth Alliance League Cup.
The visitors dominated the first half and went into the break one nil up after Chesterfield conceded their first goal in the competition.

The Spireites youngsters had their best spell for the first 20 minutes of the second half and scored an equaliser through Jimmy Adcock.

Chesterfield failed to capitalise with Darlington on the back foot. After missing a number of good chances they were caught out by a quick break and good strike which proved to be the winner.
Chesterfield looked a bit ring rusty after being without a game since January although the central defensive pairing of Richie Holmes and Sandy Moller looked pretty solid.
In the first two rounds Chesterfield had beaten Accrington Stanley and York City.
The Spireites youngsters will have to up their game if they are to get any reward from this Saturday's local-derby against Mansfield Town at Field Mill, kick-off 10.30am.
