Spireite Youth 2 Boston United 0

Posted on: Mon 02 Feb 2009

Chesterfield turned up the pressure on the League's chasing pack after a comfortable home win over bottom side Boston United at Warminster Road. Striker Jordan Bowery, who has recently been amongst Lee Richardson's squad, put the Spireites ahead after just 28 minutes of play.  The match was put out of reach in the first minute of the second half when Adam Smith's persistence paid off and forced the United defence into an error, which Smith happily pounced upon.

Chesterfield deserved their victory and could have won by more, but they were made to work for the win by the Boston United goalkeeper who was on top form. Jimmy Adcock and Ross Burns orchestrated Chesterfield's performance in midfield and Bower and A Smith were busy in attack, but in the end they could only manage the narrow victory.

The first 45 minutes were as expected with Chesterfield dominating from the start with all their attacking flair being on show

Boston's goalkeeper was in early action when he was forced to flee his area and defend the on running legs of Bowery  and then again moments later when Burn's in swinging cross found the head of A Smith.

Chance after chance came Chesterfield's way but Dave Bentley's side just couldn't manage to break the mould.

The breakthrough finally came in the 28th minute as Chesterfield took the lead. A neat ball through gave Bowery the time and the space to attack the weak Pilgrims defence. His lighting speed helped him take on the visitors back four like they wasn't even there. With just the keeper to beat he made easy work of the shot and slotted the ball home.

The visitors struggled to get into the game with their only effort coming from a Spireite error at the back. Minutes before half time a goal line scramble gifted the opportunity for A Smith to make it two but the forward couldn't direct his effort. Bowery, again using his pace to Chesterfield's advantage,  played  ball across the box which seemed to have everyone beat even the Spireite players.

The second half kicked off as if the first half never ended. A mistake at the United back forced by the quick thinking of A Smith led to a second goal. After reprocessing the Boston defender, the Chesterfield number 7 then proceeded to take the ball around the goalkeeper, in a calm and collective manner, and passed the ball into an empty goal.

Chesterfield were now in full control of the game and didn't show any signs of slowing down. Bowery had opportunity after opportunity to increase both his and Chesterfield's tally and on another day might have hit the target six times.

Midfield powerhouse Craig Clay's shot from the edge of the box, deep in the second half, forced a fine save from the oppositions goalkeeper.

Even up to the final whistle Chesterfield pushed on in hope of another goal but it wasn't to be their day for shooting. A strong and disciplined performance by the Spireites, with an attacking flair being shown through the team
