I WAS EXPECTING TO GET CRUNCHED FROM BEHIND!

Posted on: Thu 21 Jun 2007

Derek Niven and Kevan Hurst - the Spireite goalscorers at Crewe - shared their thoughts on the game with Spireites World members. Here's the interview highlights

Derek - an important goal?

It was a very important goal because I didn't think we deserved to be behind.

Tell us about the goal?

It was a good move down the right hand side and Hally played me in on the right hand side and looked up. I tried to put the ball across the face of goal to see what happened. But to see it go in the back of the net was a good feeling and to get an equaliser at that time.

Unfortunately they went up the other end and went ahead again!

That was disappointing because we had worked hard to get back to 1-1, but we showed some character to get another equaliser.

A fair result in the end?

I thought we deserved to win it but a draw's a good result, away from home. I thought we had the better chances in the game.

Kevan - you came up trumps at the death?

I thought we deserved to win and we played well first half but we are happy to get a point.

Tell us about your goal?

It seemed to take forever to drop down and I was expecting to get crunched from behind. I took it on my chest and volleyed under the keeper and I was so happy to score and then to share it with the fans. The fans have been great this season so it as much for them as for anyone else.

Derek - we are back to cup action on Wednesday, playing Chester City in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

It should be a good Cup game and it's a good chance to progress towards the final, which may even be at Wembley, but we have to take things one step at time and approach it right and hopefully get the right result.

Kevan - a realistic chance of progressing on Wednesday night and perhaps a final at Wembley to aim for?

Definitely. Every player wants to play in Cup Finals at Wembley or the Millennium Stadium. We played Chester in preseason and they are a decent outfit and it will be a tough game.

Unusually a full squad is available

Touch wood we will stay that way. Last season our form dropped when we lost a few players with injury. So hopefully we can start to progress again in the league. We have competition for places and there is good cover in every position. So I think we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.
