David emerged as a tough tackling and hard-working midfielder with Newport despite attending a school where all the organised football was of the egg-chucking variety. He skippered the Welsh youth team and represented an uncharacteristically astute signing for Chesterfield at the time. A naturally fit man and a pugnacious tackler, he was the destroyer of opponents' midfield moves in the '69-70 Championship side, but he went about his business in a way that was appreciated more because it lacked the ostentatious brutality of others in his position.
As the championship side broke up, David was on his way rather too early, and gave good service to Halifax Town, Rotherham United and York City. He was player/coach to the Minstermen between May 1980 and May '81, before joining Doncaster's coaching staff. He succeeded Kevin Randall as Goole's player/manager in August '83, and subsequently served Burton Albion and Scarborough.
Dave works for the North Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce. He has remained enviably fit: in his fifty-first year, he appeared for Johnny Quinn's All-Stars in a curtain-raiser to the FA Trophy final at Wembley, in 1998. His continued interest in Chesterfield FC saw him contribute to the steering group that set up the Chesterfield Football Supporters Society in 2001.
